Myrtle Beach Is Crazy

A whole bunch of us went to Myrtle Beach for Megan's birthday last weekend. She booked a great hotel suite for us to stay in and her parents set us up with a great party at Club Kryptonite. But here's what happened from the beginning:

I got off work a little late on Friday (I was helping set up for the monthy movie and pizza party that the young adult department puts together... they were showing I Am Legend). After I got off work, I went to pick up TJ and Mel and we all met up with Eddie at his place. Once we were all loaded up, we drove to Myrtle. We chilled with the girls at the hotel for a while, got all dressed up, and then we all caught cabs to Club Kryptonite. The party was jumpin off early there, and we closed it down at 4 am. Lots of funny stories from the club that could potentially embarass nearly everyone we went with. Most are not suitable for internet publication, so I'll drop a few hillarious keywords to whet your immagination: jorts, hardcore public makeout, multiple bathroom vomits, impromtu dance moves, tequilla as a mixer... etc. Let's just say we were way overdressed for some of the shit we were pulling. Once back at the hotel, we had to deal with some security guard and a splash of bigotry, but we brushed that shit off and went to bed.

The next day we got up way to early after a 6 am bedtime and got some breakfast at a dingy buffet across from the hotel after laughing about what happened the night before. Megan got outed for once having a DCDCO and everyone did their best to not take their embarassing antics from the previous night too seriously. Then Eddie rode back to Charleston to get some studying done. Ryan, TJ, Mel, Alex and I all went down to the beach to boot the ball for a while and then we all went swimming and cooled out on the outdoor tip. I took a nap while most everyone else went to play miniature golf, and then Alex, TJ, Mel and I rode back home to sleep for two days straight.

Great weekend. Fowler certainly knows how to DIBIOE.

People I Steez With

This is Bochet (with Will flipping the bird [flu]). He works here, drives one of these, once wrecked one of these, and seriously likes this guy almost as much as I do. Crazy funny dude... mostly because he can quote the funniest parts of commercial rap jams completely deadpan. Also, he can mean mug with the best of em. He's the originator of the best phrase of the year (DIBIOE) and it's always a good time when he's around. Do it big, Bochet.

Shouts to Palmer for This

Palmer put me on to this show The Mighty Boosh from the BBC. My introduction to the show was the character Old Greg (played by Noel Fielding). Hillarious sketch and character. The song Love Games had me rolling. Peep steez:

And here's a video of Old Greg from the live DVD:

I Keeps It Gully... Lemmegetsumdat

Here's an update on the new tape "I Keeps It Gully"

As of right now, 8 out of 13 tracks are completely done. I have to track out and render the last 5 songs and burn copies, but I'm optimistic so I'll set the release date for tomorrow (April 20th). I've also decided to increase the amount of copies I will press (up from 10 to 20) due to more people being interested in hearing this mix than I expected. For serious, I'm a little shocked so many people want to hear this particular mix--mostly because it's really gutter.

So get at me for copies tomorrow. I'll be at the library from 2 till 5, but I'll be out distributing the mix after that. DIBIOE.

Best of Boxing Episode 1

I'm starting a new series on the blog. In case you aren't aware, I am a big fan of boxing. I've been watching since I was young (my dad was an avid fan and our neighbors had a cable box that got all the PPV fights). Pops used to always reference certain fights to teach life lessons (like Ali beating Foreman in '74 to show how nothing is impossible). And my mom used to watch the fights too (she knows more about the great fights of the 80's and early 90's than most people I know).

As a treat for those not in the know, this 1985 bout between "The Hitman" Tommy Hearns and "Marvelous" Marvin Hagler is the best 3 round fight ever. It's so damn good boxing fans have dubbed it simply The War. No defense, all courage. These two dudes just stood and threw punches. It's the closest you'll ever get to a fight you'd see in a Rocky movie. Not much else to say other than peep:

New Headphones and a New Mix

I went up to Guitar Center today and picked up a new set of headphones to replace my badly broken Shure in-ear monitors. If you are looking for some flat reference headphones that have great isolation and lots of mid-range, check out the Sennheiser HD 280 pro joints that I'll be rocking till the wheels fall off.

On top of that, I started yet another new mix. This one is for Cam. I usually make mixes for parties with certain friends in mind that I know will be listening/paying attention, but I'm going to start recording routines with friends in mind and pressing very limited quantities (no more than 10 copies). I should have this one done in the next couple of days. If you want one of those super rare copies, you can send me an email at melea@ccpl.org, leave a comment here, or hit up my cell phone. Here's some of the tracks:

DJ Bird Flu - I Keeps It Gully
Raekwon the Chef - Ice Cream
Jay-Z - D'Evils
Notorious BIG - Kick In the Door
De La Soul - Much More
Jay Dee - Pause
Ed O G - I Got To Have It (Bonus Beats)
Pete Rock ft. CL Smooth - Back On the Block
ATCQ - Keep It Movin
Jaylib - The Red

My Boss Finds Me Funny Stuff on the Internet

Here's a link to a blog that my boss Kevin sent me. I don't really fit any of the categories, but some of the description for the pages applies. He should have written a description of media librarians.

Once Again, Another New Mix

The theme for the next Philladelphia Mixtape Exchange meeting has changed, so I'm preparing a new mix for May's get-together. If your not familiar with what I'm talking about, check out the website for the club my sister started as well as the MySpace page. If you dig (and you want to join), join the google group.

So for May's meeting, the theme is Summer Jams. I've decided to rethink some of my party routines and put some steez on some old mixes to make a mix that fits the theme. If you made it out to any of the parties at 16 Market you may recognize some of the transitions and whatnot; but since I haven't been spinning out a lot lately, I figured I'd drop a reminder of some of my flyest live playlists for the locals and show the members of the club in Philly what I've been doing. I may even record it live. Here's some of the jams, but not in order or anything:

Notorious BIG - Everyday Struggle
DJ Day - Got To Get It Right
Lauryn Hill - Doo Wop (That Thing)
DJ Spinna - Avenue
The JB's - You Can Have Watergate
James Brown - Funky President
Average White Band - Pick Up the Pieces

I'm also finishing up a remix of Nas ft. Lauryn Hill "If I Ruled the World" that places the a capella over the drum break from the Dap Kings' "Nervous Like Me" as well as the bonus beats from Jurassic 5's "Red Hot" (which sampled the afforementioned Dap Kings burner).

Stay on the lookout. This untitled mix should be complete in the next couple of weeks. I'm looking for title suggestions, so if you want to listen to it before it's done and help me come up with a title... get at me. Also, big shouts to Mel for naming the "Somebody Give Me a Rock" mix. I forgot to mention that when I posted about it here.

One For the Record Books

This weekend was a lot of fun.

Friday, I got off work and went over to Duncan. We cooled out there and waited for Will to get in from Columbia. Then we went to Grouchos to see Cam and get some food. Trey met up with us there and we proceeded to go to East Bay to celebrate his birthday. Pearlz for oyster shots, then Griffon, Wet Willy's (always a great choice), Brick (best bar band I've seen in a minute), Wasabi, and then back to Duncan. Then I walked home and went to sleep with a bowl of soup.

Saturday I woke up too late (10:30) to throw tomatoes at Ben and Bochet as they finished the bridge run, so I met them at Duncan and we went to lunch at Juanita's. Then back to Duncan. We watched both basketball games there with a whole bunch of people. Then I dipped out to a party with Evan while they all went to Wasabi. The party was for Gale's birthday. It was real low key, but a good time. Then I walked home and went to sleep with a box of cereal.

Sunday I woke up way late (1:15) and walked over to Ben's. We went to play basketball at Colonial lake with Will, Diddy, and a bunch of the girls. After that, Ben and I got dinner at Moe's Crosstown and I went home.

People I Steez With

This is Trey (aka Kizzle). He goes to school here and works here. He lives with this guy above this fine pizza establishment. He also dates a little person. Although he's a bit of a redneck (he wore duck boots to the bar on Wednesday), we keep him around... but I'm not sure why. Mostly, we can't get rid of him because of his man-sized loving relationship with this guy. Happy Birthday, Kizz. I'll be your caddy for the first nine holes.

I Hate Hand Stamps

A note to the bars of Charleston:

Is it seriously necessary to stamp my hand after checking my ID on a Wednesday when there are less than 30 people (including staff) in the bar? I woke up late for work this morning with a hangover and had to decide whether I would spend the few minutes before work washing the ink off my hand or eating some oatmeal.

In case you were guessing which I picked... I've got a belly full of oats and an unnecessary band-aid on the back of my hand to cover up my alcoholism.
