Friday Jams (Columbia Roadtrip Edition)

Going up to Cola after work to marinate with Will this weekend. Pretty tired this morning after going out with Mel last night, but trying my best to stay awake with some good jams. Here's a genius mix: J. Rocc playing Common's The Light into the original sample (Bobby Caldwell's Open Your Eyes) and then putting the Common instrumental under the Bobby Caldwell vocal breakdown. What you get here is just a snippet of the genius found on J.Rocc's Sex Machine Today mixtape. For those not in the know, peep Common's The Light (J. Rocc Remix):

If you read my post yesterday, you might remember me mentioning a Stevie Wonder party break with cuts from A Tribe Called Quest tastefully placed. Anyway, here it is: Green Tea's The Wonderful Beats:

To fulfill the ill boom bap quota for the week, I present to you Main Source's Fakin the Funk Remix. Peep:

Finally, one of my favorite 7" record purchases in a long while; The Edge (Remix) by Mophono. Such an ill crunchy re-edit of the David Axelrod classic. Peep:

Forth and Back IV Blog

I've been waiting for a little to bubble off about the show on Tuesday, mostly because I was super tired yesterday after getting only a couple hours of sleep.

Hunter and I rehearsed for a little after I got off work on Tuesday, ate some fast food on the way to the show, and got all set up with plenty of time to spare. I took Femi to get some equipment that he and Adam needed and left behind on the way to the show; and when I got back Hunter had already handled sound check. We sat around for about 15 minutes before Jess, Becca, Ben, Brittany, Bochet, Emily, and Cam showed up; so we decided to start spinning.

After about 40 mintues of just improv jamming, Hunter and I started our planned set. Throughout our time on stage, Walter took pictures of us on the decks; and Femi shouted us out on the mic durring intrumentals (I gotta admit that hearing Femi yell out names like Bubbleguts Brothers/Bird Flu in front of so many people geally got me gassed). Heads flipped over the Stakes is High remix we pulled off, and lots of people liked our blend from Bad Luck Blues to a Stevie Wonder and Tribe sampled party break into a tenor sax cover of John Lennon's Imagine. Forth and Back went on stage around midnight (a little earlier than usual), so we cut our planned set short to give them ample time to do their thing.

The band killed it, going for a little over an hour without a break. About 40 minutes into their set Femi called us up to cut during their cover of The Roots' Next Movement. We did our little 4 bar question and answer cut sessions during Adam's drum solo, and we were happy at the results. If you haven't seen me and Hunter do that routine before, we trade off cutting for four measures each trying to comliment each other's rhythms on the cut as well as the sample chosen to cut. After that song, Hunter and I left the stage to let Forth and Back catch some more shine while I smoked a cigarette.

After a couple more songs (pretty much right at 1 am) Forth and Back took a set break. Hunter and I came back on stage to play a planned set during their intermission, but while we were getting on stage someone yelled out "play Weezy". Once that happened, Hunter and I looked at each other and both silently decided to take the crowd on the hit parade. We call it a roller coaster set (name taken from J.Rocc's description of this type of DJing) where you play nothing but huge hits without regard to tempo or mixing at all... just dropping heat. It's caled a roller coaster set because every time you drop a song, the whole crowd should yell "Ooooh". We played Let Me Ride by Dr. Dre and Snoop, Shimmy Shimmy Ya by ODB, Scenario by ATCQ, and many others. My favorite part of doing that set was taking all the music out for a second to let the crowd sing a line only to bring the music back. All in all, it was a great night on stage.

Once the show was over, some bullshit about payment popped off (not gonna get into details for the entire interweb to see) and Hunter and I both went home after packing our equimpent/records back up.

Now I'm in the process of putting the What I Put On When I'm Banging Your Mom revised tracklist together so I can record and get packaging done on the tape. Gustavo (B'Zar and Suite Sole) hooked me up with a business card for someone that does CD duplication, so I may go that route to save myself the time of putting together 200 copies (gotta press lots more of this tape than of previous tapes now that I'm giving copies away through Suite Sole). Stay on the lookout for that mix. You'll be able to get it through me or by purchasing some heat for your feet from Suite Sole.

Come Out To Johnson's Tonight

For those not in the know (those who didn't read the blog yesterday) Hunter and I are doing the Bubbleguts Brothers thing again opening for Forth and Back at Johnson's Pub at 12 Cumberland St. downtown. It's ladies night, so females get in free and get some sort of drink special. Cover for doods is $5.

If you can't make it out but you still want to watch the show, you can peep the online feed on Johnson's Charleston Crystal Ball site to see and hear us live. You'll need quicktime, and you'll have to disable all firewalls; but you can peep us out if you read the blog but don't live in Charleston and want to see the show (Alex).

Gonna be lots of good jams tonight. We planned a forty minute set of mostly new new records, you know we got mad sets of boom bap and true school hip-hop for your brain, and we even may drop the hit parade for your face bone during Forth and Back's set break. What I'm trying to say is; neck rolls, cowboy collars, and any other head support is welcome and encouraged at the show to keep you out of the chiropractors'/masseuses' office.

Monday Wake Up Joint

Had a pretty good weekend. Pretty laid back for the most part. Got up with Hunter to practice on Saturday. We came up with a good set. If you didn't know, we're opening for Forth and Back tomorrow night at Johnsons' Pub on Cumberland. Come through if you wanna hear some good jams. Dudes in for $5, ladies in free, and of course 21+. We're gonna practice again tonight to come up with something to play during Forth and Back's intermission. We're really trying to make tomorrow's set as good as possible, and we hope to see you out there. Until then, wake up to the illy sounds of Otis Redding's rendition of A Change is Gonna Come:

Friday Jams (Stoodis Edition)

I'm looking forward to a great weekend. Gonna get real ruddy tonight, rehearse with Hunter tomorrow to get ready for Johnsons on Tuesday, and for sure do brunch on Sunday. Until then, here's a few jams to keep you going and get you through this cold Friday...

First up, People Under the Stairs' Youth Explosion (Question in the Form of an Answer LP). I listened to this on the way to work this morning... made the bike ride super steezy. Check:

And here's Giant Panda's With It (Fly School Reunion LP). If you're not acquainted, GP is from Los Angeles and they used to get all their beats from Thes of PUTS until they took over and began self-producing on their latest LP. Peep:

Finally (and keeping with the west coast party vibe of this post) here's Ugly Duckling's Pickup Lines (Journey to Anywhere LP). The drums are super swinged out. I'm jealous of Young Einstein for real. Check:

Monday Wake Up Joint (Late, but still steezy edition)

Sorry to be a day late posting this wake up joint. This past weekend was steezed out (my parents, sister, and her boyfriend came to town to help me celebrate my birthday) with lots of good food and drink, good time with my peoples, and a good bit of watching sports on TV. I'm about to order new records for our next show (Jan 27th at Johnson's Pub), gettin started on remixing the What I Put On When I'm Bangin Your Mom mix, missing my sister already, and looking forward to practicing with Hunter tonight.

My sister suggested I post the link from the article Hunter and I were featured in from the Post and Courier's Preview section, so here IT is.

In other news, you should listen to J. Period's remix to Notorious BIG's part to Young G's Perspective... and don't ask me if I'm going to see Notorious (I'm not). Peep:

Friday Jams (PUTS made me catch the vapors edition)

Earlier this week, Mel messaged me that he listened to People Under the Stairs' Jappy Jap (O.S.T. LP) and felt ashamed for sleeping. That made me go back and listen to the O.S.T. LP, and I was scrunch-faced through the 5th song... and then I rewound back to the begining to start it all over... all week. For serious, I haven't listened to anything else all week but those first 5 songs. That should say something.

Start with the Intro... Thes hits em hard with "So, basically, there's nothing changed since the last time we talked. Couple more crates, more house parties, hanging on the block. Food spots and jokes, the 40 ounce and smokes, and got a little more fame. Basically, the same bloke." That shit is ill, and makes me feel humble for the little bit of success and fame I've caught recently. Anyway, check it:

And here's the afformentioned Japppy Jap:

And the illy party track Suite For Beaver Part 1:

And Part 2:

And since I couldn't find the title track with the ill champion sound riddim outro, here's the remix to O.S.T. from the Or Stay Tuned LP:

Bubbleguts Update Steez

Hunter and I had another photo shoot last night for our upcoming article in the premiere issue of Charlie; an online publication just starting up. A nice and very talented photographer named Matt came through Hunter and Jess' house to take snaps of us practicing. Hunter and I just improvised blends and cuts, and it ended up being one of our best sessions yet. It was somehow even better than most of our planned sets.

Other than that, I watched The Diving Bell and the Butterfly on DVD last night. Pretty good movie. Visually innovative. Really captured the book well. Just finished reading Hollywood by Charles Bukowski, and I am now starting Diary by Chuck Palahniuk. Other than that, not much going on.

Monday Wake Up Joint

Simply one of the best and most heart-wrenching videos you will ever see... Otis singing I've Been Loving You Too Long at the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967. Otis was dead not even six months after this performance. In fact, in the Stax Records documentary Respect Yourself, they play this performance while showing images of Otis' crashed plane being pulled out of a lake in Wisconsin. You gotta love when Otis tells Al Jackson to "do that one more time" after the first chorus. Check and wake up:

Big Things in Oh Nine

Last night, Hunter and I spun at the Black Cart as the Bubbleguts Brothers. I think we're gonna stick with that name actually. Walter from Suite Sole took photos of our set as well as some promo photos for an interview we did with Caroline from CofC Radio. She's involved with a new online publication. I think it's called Charlie... more on that as we get more info. The interview went well, all the pictures came out great, our set was pretty good, lots of people came to show out for the homie, Forth and Back crushed it, and a great time was had by all.

Monday Wake Up Joint (Ultra Catch-up Edition)

First off, wake up with Mophono's Smile. Very steezy:

Here's an update on what's been going on since my last post:

DJing at the Suite Sole Holiday Party was a blast. Lots of good people came out (Cam, Josef, Will, Femi) to dance, drink, and chill. I met some great new people and even a couple of DJs. I met Sonar from the Space Invaders crew, and we talked shit about collecting vinyl and whatnot. The folks from Suite Sole even hit me off with these illy joints as payment for my spinning:

South Florida was a trip. I got a chance to see lots of old friends on my first night in town; but for the most part, I spent my time hanging out with my sister and her boyfriend, and my parents. I went out with Sean and did it big a few nights, and I even got a chance to catch up with Denise and Tomas on my last night in town.

I spent new years eve in Jacksonville because my dad got tickets to the Clemson bowl game. Did it super big for the last night of oh eight with Will, Mel, Harry, TJ, Megan, Charlie, Emily, Carissa, and many others; but the game the next day was smedium at best.

Spent the last couplea days in Charleston catching up with friends and am presently working at the library for the first time in a couplea weeks. Got lots of practicing with Hunter to catch up on before the 10th when we're doing yet another show with the good people of Forth and Back at the Black Cart. Also, the Post and Courier's Preview Section may be running a piece on vinyl collectors that might include interviews and pictures of Hunter and myself. In the words of the Birdman, "hey, Fresh. It's our turn"
