Monday Wake Up Joint

Had a pretty fun weekend. After getting off work and filling my growler with a great barleywine from the Charleston Beer Exchange, I stopped by Suite Sole to chop it up with Gus and Tyler. After that, on to Leah's for an epic rock band sesh with the other members of Stoodis followed by me sleeping on their couch. We had a surprise party for Schrader's birthday on Saturday, and I think we got her. Lots of late night rock band that night, and I ended up sleeping on the other couch in the living room. On Sunday, I spent most of my day playing video games with Alan, and recovered from the two previous nights.

Here's your wake up song for this week (more Brainfreeze material for you)... Pleasure Web's Music Man Part 2, which you might know as the source for Jurassic 5's Jayou:

Friday Jams

Rough morning after not getting to bed until well after 5 am. The show went pretty well considering some technical difficulties and a smaller than usual crowd. Don't get me wrong, those that showed up last night were great. Lots of heads dancing and actually being interested in what records we were playing. All the ladies in attendence were lookin real good (Charleston fashion week makes everyone except me and Hunter step their clothing game up), and we had a bunch of fun. The DJ Shadow and Cut Chemist Freeze DVD has been coming up in conversation a lot lately, so I figured I'd post some clips of the infamous all 7" records set. Peep part 1:

Check The Show Tonight

In case you've been missing posts (or you just aren't in the know), the Bubbleguts Brothers got another show with ForthNBack at the Black Cart tonight. There was a bit of worry floating around because we weren't sure if Hunter would be able to make the show (our hearts go out to his wife Jess and her family); but all that worrying was for naught. We got a great set planned for tonight, and we're real excited to do another show with Femi, Adam, Jordan, and Will. We haven't performed with them since the fiasco at Johnsons back in late January.

I've been watching DJ Shadow and Cut Chemist's Freeze and Product Placement DVDs on repeat the past few days trying to pick up on how those two ill muh fuckers communicate on stage. I've been trying to see if there's anything I can adapt/incorporate into how Hunter and I get down on the set, and I've noticed that there isn't much different between their communication on stage and how Hunter and I talk. That's encouraging for sure. Any time you can compare yourself to one of the best, it's a good thing. If you wanna check either one of those Shadow and Chemist sets, contact Clay at fifty-two.five and place an order. He got me the DJ Shadow In Tune and On Time DVD/CD set in less than two days on the special order tip, so big em up.

Other than that, I'm just trying to get through this shift at the library without letting my nerves get me all wound up before the sun even goes down. I'm gonna try to stay busy the whole shift (with the exception of a nap during my lunch break) in order to keep myself level. Hope to see you out there tonight, we've been looking forward to this one for a long time.

Catching Up With the R-O-B

Spent some time with the homie from SWP last night up in North Charleston (at least I think it's still North Chuck, might be Ladson by then) after picking up my sister's birthday present. I listened to some of his new beat tape--literally a tape... the kid is on some straight grimy shit. He was real excited to come check me and Hunter out at the Black Cart on Thursday (you should be too) since he hasn't seen us get down in the BGB style yet. Anyway, to bug him out, I showed him this video of DJ Shadow, DJ NuMark, and Cut Chemist doing their "pushing buttons" MPC routine. Peep:

Monday Wake Up Joint

In honor of Hunter's new tape being released this week (most likely at our show on Thursday at the Black Cart... if you needed some incentive to show up) the wake up joint for this week is off his Preemptive Spring BBQ Blend. Check Jeru the Damaja's Come Clean:

Friday Jams (Feelin Steezed Out Edition)

Got some new records in the mail yesterday. More ammo for the BGBs/ForthNBack show on the 26th at the Black Cart (mark your calenders, that's Thursday). One new joint I got is the ATCQ Check the Rhime UK import 12". The disc spins at 45 rpm (as opposed to the usual 33 1/3 rpm of hip hop 12") but that just makes the bass kick extra hard. Included on the disc are 2 alternate versions of the Tribe classic. I couldn't find the illy Skeff Anselm remix on youtube, so here's the Mr. Muhammad remix of Check the Rhime:

I also got the D&D Allstars' 1,2 Pass It Remix. Too steezy with the Primo beat, and it's simply nuts to hear Premier remix his own cut and make it even better. In case you didn't know, the order of the MCs on this track is as follows: Mad Lion, Doug E. Fresh, KRS-One, Fat Joe, Smif N Wesson, & Jeru the Damaja. Peep it out:

I also got People Under the Stairs' Question in the Form Of An Answer 2LP (along with 3 other PUTS 12" and a Double K split 7"). Included on the classic album is the killer cut We'll Be There. Check it:

I also got doubles on the Afu-Ra Whirlwind Thru Cities 12". Don't front on this song, especially with the acapella on the disc. It'd be a shame to remix this song without at least using the OG beat for the first verse, so look out for that when we do the show on Thursday:

Monday Wake Up Joint

Pretty gloomy out today. Kinda matches the weather from the weekend. Hunter and I are gonna be pretty busy this week pressing up his Preemptive Spring BBQ Blend for release and distribution. You can get a copy from either of us, or by stopping by Suite Sole and buying some shoes. To get you opin, J-Live's Nights Like This is on the tape:

Friday Jams (Throwback 13th Edition)

It's gloomy as a mug out today; but my parents are stopping through tonight for dinner and I'm gonna fill my growler at Charleston Beer Exchange after work. In other words, makin lemons into liquored-up lemonade (but not that Mike's Hard bullshit, I'm talkin Grey Goose in some Simply Lemonade here, people). With my folks coming to town, I figured I'd post some of my favorite live throwback jams. For example, here's Bill Cobham and the George Duke Band absolutely destroying Red Baron:

And if you've ever let me play some shit for you off youtube, you've prolly already heard this extra-ruddy Stevie Wonder through a talk box version of Papa Was A Rolling Stone:

And not quite a throwback, but a cover of a throwback, here's the Axis of Justice's House Band (Tom and Brad from RATM, Flea from RHCP, Pete Yorn, and Serj from SOAD) doing a cover of Funkadelic's Alice In My Fantasies:

And how bout Herbie Hancock and the Headhunters (in their '74 heyday) doing Chameleon:

Finally, to slow it down a bit, here's (a non-live) clip of Freddie Hubbard's Get Your Soul Together. So many great musicians on this cut... Freddie, Ralph Penland, George Cables, Ron Carter:

Monday Wake Up Joint

Check out this illy exerpt from the Kepintime film:
This weekend was pretty low-key. I wasn't feeling too well, plus I worked at the library Saturday and Sunday. Did it real big on the bikes with Ben on Friday, played Rock Band on Saturday, and saw Watchmen on Sunday. Other than that, not much happened.

Monday Wake Up Joint

It was damn cold this morning. Made me not want to get out of bed. On days like today when I need to get up and out on the slow tip, I listen to Mos Def's Modern Marvel (New Danger LP):

The shows this weekend were crazy. Hunter and I spent most of our Friday night practicing and getting our sets ironed out. Saturday afternoon was for practicing, organizing our records, and packing our equipment before heading out to Suite Sole. We got to Suite Sole a little after five to set up and pick up the PA we were borrowing from Sonar. Big ups are deserved to that man for always finding ways to help us out, even when it may not be the most convenient thing for him. Our set at Suite Sole went pretty good. We went off three turntables and a mixer so Hunter could cut during my nearly all instrumental set. I tried to cut during his time on the decks, but it didn't work as well for me since I had to use my off hand. We packed up (Gus and Mel were both a huge help with that) at 9 while playing this for your face bone, and made our way over to Recovery Room to set up for Walter's birthday party. We owe even more props to Gus for taking care of us with the set-up and making sure we had everything we needed. We had a lot of fun spinning at the party, but it was really easy for us to enjoy ourselves when we were so well taken care of. The sound system was fantastic--for once we could hear ourselves in our headphones, monitors, and PA... thanks again to Sonar--and all our friends were hanging out in front of our DJ cave dancing and having a great time. Big ups to Gus and my roommate Allen for helping us break down and get some of the equipment back to the house.

Sunday was lots of fun. Just hanging around town, chillin with Walter and Brittany, and playing lots of pool with my roommates. I ran into Femi, and he mentioned another Forth and Back event in March. Stay on the lookout for that. We're certainly excited to work with those cats again. Speaking of Forth and Back, check out this video that got shot at our first event with them at the Black Cart:
