Friday Jams

First off, check this... steeziest invention of oh nine so far (by far):

I know I've mentioned this before, but if you're in Charleston and you've got no plans for Saturday; come check the BGBs at Suite Sole from 6 to 9 and at Recovery Room from 10 to 2. We're doin it all night, keepin it live off just wax, and generally destroying your face bone with beats.

For more Friday Jams enjoyment, check DJ Krush's Meiso ft. The Roots (DJ Shadow Remix). I almost got my hands on an OG 12" copy, but they sold out on Turntablelab in like 6 hours. I guess that's understandable since they were deadstock MoWax 12" (mad rare/expensive... they were charging $20 each--worth it by the way). Anyway, peep:

And here's one of my favorite DJ vids from my favorite youtube channel. Check out the page Ninjando made, and be sure to check his videos if you're into scratch DJing. He's compiled a great channel full of videos from the likes of ISP, Allies, Beat Junkies, X-Men, Birdie Nam Nam, Ricki Rucker, D-Styles, etc. So here's DJ Kentaro's Shuriken Cut:

Finally, a banger for your brain. Here's Afu-Ra ft. Kymani Marley with Equality:

Bubbleguts Bros. Shows This Week

For those who weren't already aware, Hunter and I are extra busy this week getting ready for our most demanding gig yet; which is actually two gigs back to back. We're spinning at the Suite Sole release party from 6 to 9 on Saturday (at Suite Sole) and at Walter's birthday party from 10 to 2 also on Saturday (at Recovery Room). If you are a math head, you may have noticed that we're gonna keep the jams movin for pretty much a full work day (with a lunch break thrown in between shows); which is going to take a lot of planning and preparation.

Hunter and I are going to both do solo sets at Suite Sole; so if you want to see how we get down individually, I would recomend coming out to that shit. If I were you, I wouldn't sleep on the party at the Recovery Room tho, because we're planning some insane colaborative sets of boom-bap, cool-out downtempo steez, and some facebone party starters for the late night when the crowd gets opin. We're both showing out with stacks of new wax (Hunter got an early birthday present, I'm just maintaining my vinyl addiction) and a few new remixes (EFP's Tried By Twelve for example).

Basically, if I don't see you much this week it's because I'm busy preparing, but we hope to see you out at one/both of these events this weekend. Come show out for the BGBs and you won't be sorry.

Monday Wake Up Joint

Here's your wake up joint; Charles Bradley and the Menahan Street Band's The World (Is Going Up In Flames):

What a crazy weekend. Friday night started at Cam and Brittany's for the release of their homebrew. Big ups to them for calling the libation Bubbleguts Brew after me and Hunter. We appreciate that to the fullest. Then it was off to Tyner's going-away party. We went to meet up at AC's, but there was a sick line (don't go to AC's on the weekend) so we went up to recovery room. Some hilarity jumped off, some sexy shenanigans at last call (I won't put the parties involved on blast), and Ben and I afterpartied at my spot. I DJed at a party on Saturday with DJ Sonar of the Spaced Invaders and then went home to burn some more copies of the new mix. Sunday was for making more copies of the mix, going out to dinner, and seeing Coraline in 3D. All in all, pretty good weekend (Emily's leaving was almost balanced out by lots of good times).

Friday Jams

First off, here's Cannibal Ox with Vein:

You may remember me talking about Sonar and Flatbroke from the Spaced Invaders in this post, but those dudes are really showing out for ya boy. For instance, check out their site and peep how the influenza has proliferated. It's a good look. Hunter and I are really digging how they put on for us, and we're looking for ways to put on for them. It's nice to meet DJs who aren't crazy territorial and are willing to collab.

Now back to the jams. I'm pretty sure I've posted this before, but I heard Aesop Rock's Citronella out at the bar last night... made me want to share it here, so here's a live version (check Big Wiz on the third verse... so precise):

Random Mind Spray (1st edition)

In order to keep up with the blog, and fill in the gaps when I haven't posted in a while, I've invented the random mind spray style post. Example:

I couldn't remember ever being more tired than on Saturday when I was pressing up copies of the new mix until I saw Ben. He reminded me that I went a few days without sleep while getting ready to distribute I Keeps It Gully.

I went bowling last night for the first time in I can't even remember.

Is it weird that I can't remember stuff like that but I can recall that Kareem Abdul Jabaar was the referee in the episode of Full House when the guys played basketball and Uncle Jesse had a "sweet spot" where he could continually make the same shot?

My previous order from turntablelab hasn't arrived yet, but I already want to place a new order since they have the PUTS Question in the Form of an Answer LP and Youth Explosion 12".

I'm going to miss Emily Tyner.

We went out for Eddie's birthday last night; and in usual drunk Eddie fashion, he escalated an argument to the point that I needed to grab him up and drag him away before he got stuck by a bouncer (sorry to put him on blast, but it was funny).

People seem to like the new mix, and I'm really glad for that. Makes me feel like my work was worth it.

New mix coming real soon. Like, in before the end of March soon.

New Mix Due Out Valentines Day (how appropriate)

For those not privy to the new shit (new shit has come to light), I am releasing a new mix on Valentines Day (tomorrow). The title is "What I Put On When I'm Puttin It On Your Mom," and it is a mix to play while hooking up with your special lady/dude. Here's the track list to get you opin:

What I Put On When I'm Puttin It On Your Mom
Mos Def - The Panties
Notorious BIG - Big Poppa
D'Angelo - Brown Sugar Remix
Common - All Night Long
The Roots - Silent Treatment (Kelo Mix)
Erykah Badu - Sometimes
Slum Village - Fall-N-Love
Lauryn Hill - Can't Take My Eyes Off Of You
A Tribe Called Quest - Bonita Applebum
Bird Flu - Honey For the Two Of Us
Lovage - Pit Stop
Portishead - Lots More Sour Times
RjD2 - Rain

And here's the artwork, which I just finished with the ultra-analog cut and paste collage work; and is in no way trying to objectify/demean women:

Monday Wake Up Joint

I have to start by apologizing for not posting Friday jams the other day. Work was extra busy since we had two performances to kick off this year's Lowcountry Blues Bash festival at the library. Put that on top of only sleeping a few winks on Thursday night, and you've got my excuse for spacing on the blog.

Anyway, here's today's wake up joint: an untitled Rjd2 Intstrumental from the Def Jux Revenge of the Robots tour DVD. Peep:

Over the weekend, I met up with Jason and Alex (Sonar and Flatbroke) of the Spaced Invaders at the Daily Dose on JI for the Stone Groove party to benefit the downtown branch of the Boys and Girls club. Their set (and set-up... some crazy equipment) was great, and they even let me get on for a bit to drop some records. I never messed with a Rane mixer before, but the first thing I noticed was that the sound quality was amazing. I won't put those cats on blast for how much that mixer costs, but if you click on the link then it's not my fault. Being able to scratch and manipulate video was even cooler than I thought it would be as well. Basically, I had a great time out there and am looking forward to next month's Stone Groove.

Also, if you don't have a copy of my I Keeps It Gully mix, you can now download it as a podcast thanks to those Spaced Invaders cats. If you go to this site and click on the iPod at the top left corner of the screen, you'll be able to download my mix as well as lots of Sonar and Flatbroke productions. Check em out and big em up.

Got the photos from Walter of our last Forth and Back show (1.10.09 at Johnsons); and I'll be posting some of them here later in the week, so stay on the lookout for that.

Dwyane For Ya Brain

Monday Wake Up Joint

I went to Columbia this weekend with Leah to stay with Will and cool out with RoBo and Brittany. On the way there, Leah and I listened to The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill in the car. I always really liked her cover of Frankie Valli's Can't Take My Eyes off of You (ever since 8th grade when I first saw Conspiracy Theory and the song rolled during the end credits). Granted, the version from the soundtrack is a little different from the rendition that made the album (I got both on wax); but I think I like the album version better for the way the kick drum bangs just the right amount in the inro... it makes it a little easier to mix. Anyway, here's Lauryn Hill's Can't Take My Eyes Off Of You (Album version) for your morning wake up routine:
